1974. August 25 to Sept, 23, 1974. Wardair Charter to Galwech, London, Lyon, Birmingham left Vancouver in sunshine; this was very fortunate because Wardair had passengers board the plane by means of 2 stairways from the tarmac. Candy was passed around. My window seat was on front part of wing so I could see a fair amount. This 747 had an exceptionally short wingpan. John Turner & wife & Hugh Fleetwood & family were on the flight. We flew out over Georgia St. & up Howe Sound (3000ft to 12000ft elevation increase as we went up the Sound) Good view of coastal range & Fraser Valley before cloud hid the ground. Beacon on Iceland? was visible when we were seeing 1st lht. of sunrise. About this of darkness betw. sun setting & sun rising, As we came over Shetland Is. it was announced that it was raining heavily in London. Onto Manchester & London - glimpse of green fields as we came down through the "thunderheads" at Galwech Smooth landing. Disembarked down ramp in rain to bus wh. took us to terminal. Passport, OK. (Commonwealth) picked up bag, nothing to declare. ' out & on way to train. Caught 10:24 am train to Victoria - 40 minute trip w. stops at 4 stations. It was about 10 mins betw. getting luggage & getting a train.

"At Victoria checked trains to Brighton, Teignmouth & phoned hotel for accommodation. Mayflower had no vacancies & referred me to Salisbury. Using Salisbury phone no. I got Brisbane Court Hotel. Took train to Earl's Court & booked in at hotel who had seen better days. Radio & telephone in each room. As bathroom light was not operative, I located another one. Toilets seemed to be messy. Had bath, laid clothes out then went to Haymarket. Here I discovered Aug. 25 was a Bank Holiday & American Express was closed. Walked briefly up Regent St. & returned to hotel picking up Ryewheats & Danone Yogurt. Checked w/ Nevein Hotel for accommodation, pd. deposit advance of £3. Returned to hotel & to sleep. Aug. 27.

Birmingham - Landover. Went west on A To Kidderminster to Tenbury Wells. 9/19-74. Across red Triassic, then red-purple Old Red S & onto Silurian then Ord. Warwickshire, Herefordshire & Worcesters are charact. by mediaeval wood & stone buildings. Welsh bldgs of yeomen are stone; Wales also is char. by hills w. rock exposed in contrast to England w. rolling grazzy & tree covered slopes & hills. Abundance of sheep. Burning of fields.

Stop 1. Phot. black shale w. trilobites graps & brachs. not so apparent. Larcolith intrudes black shales. Construction of houses a few 100 yds to W. means this Middle Permary may not survive much longer. There are several quarries & just not this one X S. edge of Gorwth basin Stop 1-2 Quarry down long road - now not used Cwm - Gwyll about 200 ft missing Caradoc 7 (zone 1) b) .1 mile to North / Caradoc & Caradoc 7 etc. & transition into Llandoverry - ideal place lower for type section of boundary b/w Ord. & Silur Played and inclination general reeds? Icebergs drops pebbles 1 cast of the postlome.

3 9-10-74 to 9-10-74 Hlandover - town. Bnnts of Wales. Pre/680maps. Hlandover basin Stop II-1.a) Small farm on side road. Rapidly flowing stream. Could see different lithologies; eroded "gulch" at contact. W Cloinda occ. you always go to shallower water faunas acc. to Cocks - if it went to deeper water things would be incorrectly interpreted. b) Quarry - would not have recognized this as a quarry. Hlandover flags Gut? Stream margina marginalis [illegible] K Hlandover, c) Up hillslope over phylite "breccia" onto flagot grits. Flags are in soil under soil cover [ Dalmanella down into Arenig ] in England & Morocco - problem. Nemato graphic gracilis occurs lower than shales labelled N. gracilis

9-11-74. Fairfach Cutting. Stop 11-6. 9-10-74. Bryozoan float presumably letone from lenses in Flaggs & Grits. Also pieces of grit w. bryozoans. Age: Upper Blawnian? Late Mississippian? 9-11-74 - A. Bryozoan late float. 9-11-74 - B. Bryozoan grit, float. Stop 11-6. succession in railway cutting ca 100-150 yds south of southern railroad gate. Collected by Rousseau Flowers. The material was collected from locality X on cross section but the authorities (student mapping the area R. Addison, said material probably came from ?X on cross section; this was based on discussion that late wedges occur at X? 9-11-74 - C. Dynevor Parks. Upper lower Blandillo, associated with late lenses w. bedding planes filled w. Sowerbyella antiqua. Exposure along private road running N.W. from the artificial lake at the western end of Deer Park. V. Few graps have been found in type Blandillo.

Discussion by Alwyn Williams 9-9-74 Towy Anticlinorium NE NW deepening basin w. clastics typical superbasin SW SE. Caradocian - linear anticlinorium at inception. at sites along NW-SE ripples various parts of High CH4C5 (Tellichan) sits uncomfortably on lower Blandeiio. Troughs (crossfolds) on anticlinorium. Blaenwern Breith - volcanic complex w. apolites, intermed, rx + ground Blaendindon phylades up & Blaendindon - an island. watershed E of W. - sides N side no sediment. S side has a lot of sediment. Blaendeilo sedimentary basin of sh. + late; then outer ring of grapelitic shales Abnormal development of Blandeiio & Blanwern series. Blaendeilo wedge in Welsh Basin.

Top of Elairbach Gr has late w. hloydolithus lloydi & this is restricted to known in Meadotown w. Gylpograpthus Trisintia prototyp in Bettow Beds. Below Benton & Meadowtown is Weston Fm & this contains Didymograptus murchisonii v.; Elairbach Gr = Weston Fm. Bergstrom disagrees - then disagreement by A. Williams on where is teretiusculosa Zone G. Elles never mapped this in the field; she tried to substantiate Lapworth's framework of 1910. First of all by combining w. Elbed (2 bright young things from Birmingham) who had to keep busy. Then in 1930s a post-doct. at Newnham College was given the job of mapping the Bulth area & the teretiusculosa zone. This gal enlarged Geol. Surv. map of area; did no mapping

Hlanddilo is being very much expanded as a strat. unit W & N. NE Upper Hlanddilo Middle Hlanddilo Hlandd lo Lower Hlanddlo 1000ft section lower Type Hlandilo is 1,000 ft. # Stop III-1+2 in Mydram District the Hlandilo is 200ft. 9-12-74 - A. Stop III-6. p.13. Kampeter Veffrey section Caradoloc. The upper part is believed by P. Williams to be Caradoc. 9-12-74-B - X middle. Stop III-5. p.13. Bryn-bone quarries. Either Upper Hlanddilo or Costonian because collections comes from upper part 9-12-74-C.-X upper. Stop III-45. & X p.13. Bryn-bone quarries. 9-12-74. Aberisdy Bay. Type section of Hlanwin N.side of St. David's some miles north is location of Hlanwin type section Llanduvin Farm - is type section; there is no town of Hlanduin loc. 3. Classic muschisoni locality loc.4. These 2 bes. Covered by water - tide in + up. Origin of rocks for Stonehenge. Priesilli Hills. Works done by amateur gelogist at S.T.C. Blue-grey volcanic rocks carried by softs down streams to Bristol Channel to Avon then over Mendip Hills, Cotwolds & - these were open chalk areas to Salisbury Plains.

9-18-74. Stop VI - 5. Rhynelas kate. (Rin- las). Widespread Caradoc fauna found at Gaspé (or Willington pt.); Fenerinurid unit of Estonia, Maine etc. = middle Mayville (vague enough). Photog. of R. kate. Not a nodular slate but a shearing, post-depositional phenomenon has resulted in clay compaction; Ca CO3 soln. Compaction, "thickening" of strata vertically Stop VI - 6. Unconformity. Calcareous ashes in Caradocian have by far the most abund. Faunas in this division

Regional Picture. Bala area has series of fault bot blocks wh. are sinking as sedimentation takes place - all are : shallow water deposits subtidal but not v. deep. How does this differ from F. Williams interpretation of hills on anticlinorium wh. are gently eroded as subsidence. In Bala area the volcanic intrusions (andesites) & volcanic outflows provided sediments from within the basin unlike area to S. & W. The Irish ridge was not a source of sediment. On west side of Irish Ridge there was more rapid subsidence & diff. kind of sediments. The subduction zone is from E. acc. to Dewey & to W. acc. to one of the earlier writers. Anglesey Northern section has an entirely different relation i.e. Wales Anglesey. S.E. Ireland shares some similarities w. Wales. Irish Ridge.

In Caradoc glaciation, Eustatic change betw. 60-100 ft. Change in fauna in various levels Oral is v. marked

9-16-74. Stop VIII - 1. Quarry Face. Sprized here PC Harnage w. calv. crugl w. w. brach. Salprie Harnage Shale. (3 collections) 9-16-74-A. Late hand near base of exposure w. brachs, bry, ostracodes. 9-16-74-B. Shaley late 6ft above A. 9-16-74-C. Float. The unconformable relation betw. Precambrian & Harnage Shale is apparently "slightly" faulted. No one could work out what structure had occurred to then put Harnage Shales in horizontal & awirled position

Hope Bowder Village. VIII - II. Black Riverian transgression acc. to S. Bergstrom, is shown in this otc, 9-16-74 - D. Fine shale w/ abund. byzozoans. VIII - III. Sondley Quarry 9-16-74 - E. Bry. in shale in lower unit, the Sondleyan Chatwell Group. 9-16-74 - F. Bry. with phosphatised linings are found in beds near lowest part of unit acc. to Pat Brenchley. Could not find any byzzoans in overlying hongvillian Alternata late, however, collected a sample 9-16-74-F, hoping something may come to light when I cut it. 9-16-74 - G. Bryzzoans at Choney Pool.
