(See Francis 284 & 291) Both species adequately fill by Francisill of S.a- S.a - has sheaths nodules (visible to eye.) S.q - has not. S.a - the only infl. base bristles straight v distinctly barbed. S.q has bristles barbed inconspicuously only at very tip, some seem smooth (20x). Bristle dif- fers in length but are not straight. S.a basculin definitely tho not very sharply angled S.q " " more obscurely angled. S.a has heads rather fully globular and now pinkish, S.q " " which in comparison look less globular and much darker (brownish) in color. R.B.N [8-4-38] S.atrovirens in fr. Timber Trails Pond. 6-29-38 Betula papyrifera L. var papyrifera Spach G 335 = B. papyrifera Marsh RUBYI 209, Hough 1201, Keller 302 Nothfr. Young tree (not too young) road- side southward. From all Houghland Keller this is B. pap - not B. populifolia. This strengthens opinion
