situated on a sterile plain at
the base of rather high long
hills or mountains. Nitre
is practically the chief export.
(25) We remained in La Paz
loading nitrate & ore
concentrates from Bolivia
until 1 P.M. A
distinct remark in Prescott's
Conquest led me to the discovery
that the Andes have only
one low spot in them or break thin
the wall which is at Cajamarca,
where they pass are only 6,000 or
7,000 ft high, South of this point
they remain 14,000 to 15,000 feet
eight to the Transandine Pass
which pass is 28,000 ft. North
of Cuzco Cajamarca they are
again high thus this place
is near the boundary of
many Andean animals some
like the llama & vicunna not
roaming further north.
