Prescott speaks of the mid-gul enforcement protection law for the [illegible] wild llamas vicuñyas by the Incas who hunt it them annually for their wool & meat. They were surrounded by some 5000- 6000 men in a gigantic drive who used spears & lances. Some of the males were killed for the meat, especially thides and the vicuñyas & llamas were only captured, sheared & turned loose again. 26. Reached Coquimbo at 8 P.M. & stopped 2 hours for mail & passengers only. weather cloudy or misty cool with a fresh south-west wind & rather large swells or rollers. Mist obscured most of higher mountains only coast line being visible.
