On our way from the steamer to the wharf we passed over a shallow reef lined by exposed rocks on each side on which were large numbers of slatey gulls clustered together. A few Seals were seen in the harbor swimming about the boats. 24 sailed in at an ore port, Mejillones a few miles above Antofagasta at 8 A.M. & remained until noon taking cargo. Reached Antofagasta at 5 P. M. The harbor is an open roadstead & great swells make it rough even in the best weather. Went ashore with Isantoin in a launch & remained until 10 P. M. The town is well paved, wide sidewalks & neat in appearance with excellent shop. It is
