27 THURSDAY 168-80 MT. MICHAEL ; GONO
Only 2 mammals in traps. Pigs in boys' traplines. THIS IS A NEW RAT
FOR ME - BIG EARS, LONG HIND FEET, MARKED WHITETAIL TIP, RATTUS TAIL.
CAN NOT PLACE IT. IN P.M. JOHN + I WALKED OUT TO FAR END OF GONO
PIDGE, Beautiful views - Wahgi River & Asaro River join to form the Tua
Just below. Precipitous drop on one side (N) of trail. Found no caves but
collected a few plants. Small circular houses along lower ridge crest,
Pigs live in some. Took a number of pictures. Boys pointed out 3 pigeons
in a tree - all 3 with I shot - small boys found them all. To Wertz Home
cream pie.
FAIR - until 4 P.M. Heavy rain 6-7. 28 FRIDAY 169-79 MT. MICHAEL - GONO. HOME 11:00
Our first really nice day here - only Mt. M. covered. JOHN BROUGHT HOMER DOB &
SONIA + Pipistrellus from Twin Creeks last night. Two more white-tailed
rats, I Lorentzimys + First Rattus niche. Herps went over 2000 today,
John cataloging. Another hot in this afternoon. Ruth encourages the
Youngsters to collect frogs. Ben Wertz went to Lufa in A.M. to bring
out Bill + Mrs. McSeweny + her mother - staying for dinner. Saved the
Head, Feet + a wing of one pigeon. Tonight we had pigeon soup + fried
Pigeon - very good. Packed gear - ready to leave early tomorrow. Boy
Brought a baby ring-tail in this P.M. (10 species for camp). John W. arr. Sept. 2
170-78 FAIR (for Gono), Fair on N.E. 29 SATURDAY 241-241 GONO to Camp E. of Lufa
Up early to load Rover. Off at 8:15, Road fairly good, but
John had the motor all out a few times. Did not break any
Bridges. Good view of the rugged sky-line of Mt. Wilhelm. Dry road
on North slopes. Spent all P.M. rigging 2 flys + 2 tents. Camp site is
near a brook + 1ยบ forest - also near a logging area. Will be good to work
under a fly again. John shot a pip at dusk. Boys + I have a token 25 traps
out. This is pig country, too, but not as bad as Gono. Looks like a good camp.
FAIR - on N.E. slope at least. 30 SUNDAY 171-77 CAMP IN BEECH FOREST
Boys built a fine worktable under fly. Split Pandanus boots make
excellent surface. 2 Melomys + 2 Rattus + Pip John shot last
night - also made up the beautiful little ring-tail from Gono.
One Tul-tul (Lundoy) and crowds of curious visited us. Some
helped put in small house, bath-house + cook shed. Lik Lik
+ I jacked for 2 hours up logging trail - saw nothing. A Faith
