8th Month AUG.9 AUGUST 1959 31 Days LETTERS: TAY, Mrs. M. LEAHY, MAISIE SPILLER, 165-83 FAIR, HIGH, HEAVY CUMULUS 24 MONDAY 226-129 GOROKA TO GONO, MT.M. To Buntings to pick up stores + to warehouse to pack Rover + trailer. Off at 9:40. Stopped at Ian Fraser's coffee estate for tea. East thru the valley angling to the south, then west along north slopes of Mt. Michael. Stopped at Lufa patrol post. William McSeveny, wife + mother gave us tea. He is the E.M.O. Onto Gona on west slopes of Mt. Michael. Beautiful forest - in cloud on divide. Staying at rest house. Bat shooting: 1 Pipistrelle + 1 Dobsonia (which we could not find); Tobram + Liklik set is M. S.P. TILILA FAITH Each. Visit from Ben WERTZ + young daughter Ruth (+ dog Toby) mission. 166-82 GONO c. 6400 Ft.- IN CLOUD ALL DAY, RAIN. 25 TUESDAY 237-128 4 Rattus exulans in traps. Tents up today. Two "7-days here for a few hours: 1 a Dr. Len Barnett; 1 a movie photographer Eric Weir. Off on a medical patrol S.W. of Mt. Michael. Tom Gilliard stayed with Dr.- He founded leper colony in Highlands. Ruth brought a boy up with 5 frogs + 1 lizard (0/6). Man brought in a black snake (1/0). John + I shot bats at Twin Brooks - 1 Pipistrelle, Good Dobsonia flight. No luck shooting. 14 steels, 12 rats set along brook, 30 M. S.P. lifted + put in forest above Brooks. Gono ridge oriented N-S. Rest house hooks off to west. LATE IN DAY + AFTER DARK 167-81 GONO, MT. MICHAEL PARTLY FAIR, SOME SUN, CLOUD + RAIN 26 WEDNESDAY 238-127 INTERESTING ANTECHINUS (?) in forest trap. Larger than A. wilh. + not A. melanurus. A Pogonomys in a steel on log over stream; also a Melo mys + 4 Rattus exulans. At least a dozen R.I.X. offered today; took one with yellowish belly. Frogs + lizards came in slowly. Ruth told John about cave on Gono Ridge; sent boy with him to find it. No luck - boy would not or could not find it. Ruth brought in 2 very large stick insects found on casurinas near her home. tied Bought a small (40-50 lb.) pig today - alive, squealing, on a pole - for 8 gold-lip shells (about £2-). Kim cooked some ribs for us + will save a leg; the rest went to our boys who are very happy about it. THICK CLOUD (WET) - Good moth night. Lamp hanging in garden house. Caught gecko on garden post. 2 other small ones brought in today. New trap lines out tonight on top of small hill on ridge (30 Mls, 12 M.A.T.)
