8th & 9th Months AUG. & SEPT. 1959 31 & 30 Days (5-6) Sun+cloud, Rain early A.M. + late P.M. 31 MONDAY 243-122 Beech forest camp (Mt. M.) John, Tobram, Edewawa, Sauni off at daybreak to climb Mt. Michael. Drove to Lufa to pick up track. Tobram trapped a bandicoot + 3 Rattus came in. Also made up the ring-tail I bought yesterday. This has been a day of confusion in camp. Visiting Lulualis, their Marys, and crowds of Monday "road-workers" out sightseeing. They over-ran the camp until we chased them all out — but they didn't move far. Tomorrow we build fences. We had 1 bar today — but of little use. John down Mt. at 6:45. Camp at 5:15 Brought back a big collection. Mt. in cloud most of day. Elev. 12,135 ft. Tackedon Road — nothing. A lovely day. 1 September TUESDAY 244-121 P.O. from Lufa brought some mail to us: Kay, Jim Oliver, + Mimi. Jock Hiked just back from patrol + on way to Goroka. Few natives around today. Lun Day, My favorite Tul-Tul gave me local mammal names. Hetana had a white-tailed Pogonomyx, caught in steel trap. Kim Jacked a ring-tail last night, + tonight he shot a more. Tobram + I were in uncut forest up the road — collected 1 Phalanger vestitus. T. is a gem as a jackling companion. Wrote Kay + John took letter in to Goroka. He will meet John Womersley's plane tomorrow. Mr. Laughlin + son stopped on way out. Jock told us that Len Barnard — the 7- day went on patrol to stop natives from importing pigs from Chimbo; they will introduce goats! Did not know that 7-days ate any meat! Fair — S-E wind. Cool P.M. 2 WEDNESDAY 245-120 Mt. Michael — Beech Forest. John arrived from Goroka with John Womersley about mid-morning as Len & I were having tea. J.W. came up from Lae on an M.A.L. charter flight with his collecting gear + his boy, Nema. Our camp now consists of 3 tents, 3 flys, 1 cook shed + 2 "small houses". Paul + Norman Sellers, from the Faith Mission at Lufa, arrived early on their motor scooter with a Eudromicia that a cat brought in + deposited under Barbara's bed — new for Mt. Michael. Tobram had a bandicoot, + 2 species of Rattus completed the catch. Small boys brought in a few frogs. John brought the heap catalog up to date. Len is still cataloging John C's Mt. Michael collection — over 100 numbers. John W. out collecting up the logging road. Len has hardly had a chance to collect yet. John brought mail: Betty Horner, Louis Huntoon + 3 bank (Dusty Millers out board motor has been paid for $574.). Chicken dinner. No Jacking
