110 Tues. Oct. 12 I was up early and the first to break fast and at 8 with the bus "Frank's Flyer" out to Ryala, a very charming road path of the way along the track: walked from Ryala out to San Ramon Penal Colony and met Mr. Cowley and Mrs. Chambers the first, Lufth. We drove over to the house and loafed around till lunch time; met Miss Cowley a most charming woman. Took a little rest and then Cowley drove me all around the estate, a wonderful place and wonderfully managed. The rain drew us in but later we looked the friggery over, came back for tea. Walked into the prison and saw the men at meals Had a most gorgeous arm- set. After dinner Mr. walked down to Mr. Chambers house and he gave me a concert on his vi- olo. It has been a most charming and interesting day.
