The Contents of Box No. 3, Ornith. Dept. for Relief, correspond with the Catalogue; but in Box No. 2, I found this was 13 Ornith. Spec. with an erroneous label stating that they belonged to Box No. 3, (more probably Box No. 4). Box No. 4, having been badly packed, contained only 13 instead of 17 Specimens, for half a part of the latter belonging here. There was but 72 Ornithological Specimens in Box No. 5, instead of 77, that the Artists were to have placed in the Catalogue. No Box No. 1 for Relief could be found; there was one with the Relief label, No. 9, containing the whole, called for us the 13th of — No Box No. 2 for the Relief could be found. There was one, No. 10, with 54 Bird Skins. No Box No. 3 for the Relief could be found; there was one, No. 11, with 5. Maltay skins, Depot Log of the Botanic Collection, presented its contents in an entire state of decomposition. List of Boxes and Books containing Specimens of Zoology, Mineralogy, Botany, etc., collected by the Exploring Expedition, and placed on board the U.S. Ship Relief, for transportation to the U.S. Hats. Box No. 3 — 1 Major Box of Shells; 1 Deer’s head Thorns, 1 Skin of Brama Olatoponea, 2 Patuxent Minutus, 40 skins of Birds. Box No. 4 — 17 Ornithological Specimens. Box No. 5 — 16 Packages of Shells; 1 Major Box of Devil’s Fish; 1 Skin of Star Fish; 13 Patuxent Skins; 1 Bosom Flat Skin; 1 Lizard; 1 Emu box of Insects, and 72 Ornithological Specimens. Box No. 6 — 1 Guanaco Skin (and 1 Deer skin) Box No. 7 — 1 Guanaco Skin, and 2 Topi Skins. Box No. 8 — 1 Porpoise Skin; 1 Young Seal Skin; — 6 Alligator Skins; 3 Wolf Skins; 1 Llama- Skin; 102 Bird Skins, and 1 Porpoise Skull. Box No. 9 — 52 Birds Skins. Box No. 10 — 5 Alligators; 1 Sea Leopard Skin; — 14 Lances from the Savage Islands. "The foregoing list of Specimens were collected by Ellis P. R. Peale, Naturalist of the Exploring Expedition. The Boxes are marked 'Exploring Expedition Zoological Dept. No. 3,' and are sealed with the Seal of the Expedition. Box No. 1 — Contains Crustacea. Box No. 2 — Do. Boxes Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 — Do Minerals, Collected by Ellis P. R. Dana, Mineralogist; Marked, the Kege 'Crustacea,' and the Boxes 'Mineralogy, Exploring Expedition,' and are sealed with the Seal of the Expedition. Boxes Nos. 1 to 8 — Contain Botanical Specimens: Box No. 9 — Seeds, Plants, (Collected by Mr. P. McRae, Botanist, and Mr. E. Brackenridge, Naturalist; Marked 'Botanical Specimens, Exploring Expedition,' and sealed with the Seal of the Expedition.) Box No. 2 — Contains Zoological Specimens.
