Sooty Tern — Tonight we took
regurgitation samples of 500 young
sooty terns by placing a plastic
sheet beneath a wire pen in which all
the birds were placed. Weight of all
the regurgitated food was taken.
Errors would be as such: Sand
was introduced into sample by
the young themselves, by wind, by a
wedge-tail digging nearby, + by
some sand that was packed around the
outside edge of the plastic sheet to help
keep it in place; many birds regurgitated
before entering the pen + some regurgitated
after being released. It may be
noted that all the young birds did
not regurgitate, however this is to be
expected + would not enter as an error.
The weight of the total regurgitation was
12 pounds, therefore the average per bird was
0.024 lbs, or 0.384 oz., or 10.896 grams.
