Bretley, D.A. 1964 Sand Island, Johnston Is. Atoll (Notes) Mon June 23 (cont) as 535-14062 was incubating under the old dock. Red-Tailed Tropicbird — Band number 565-12008 was found sitting near 565-12015. Evidently these birds are a pair. They are incubating an egg under a Nesserodinidia argentin on the south side of the causeway just as we leave the man-made portion of the island. Brown Booby — Seven (7) young were landed today, 3 in the islet + 4 on the east slope of the island in the main colony. Since the young wander about it was unsafe to associate the young with a nest number, instead one of the adults were caught & the band number read. Past data can then be consulted to determine when the egg was laid & hatched. Data as follows: (adult or islet could not be captured to associate with the young) Band No. of Young Band No. Adult which young was associated Location young banded Probable Nest No 737-44615 - 44616 - 44617 - 44618 - 44619 - 44620 islet islet islet main colony " " 737-44072 A-M - 44048 A-F - 44026 # 36
