Sand Island, Johnston Is. Atoll

Thu. July 9 (col) plumage (from immature to adult plumage)
was collected as a specimen. The
band number, 753-17588, was left
on the bird, as was the orange nylon
leg streamer. This bird was banded
last year; mostly likely was an
immature, according to the changing
plumage now. It was speckled with
black in the forehead & on the throat
& chin. Many of these birds have been
sighted, but this was the first bird
to be seen with a band. Previously we
didn't know whether these birds were this
years young or last years young. By
finding this banded bird, it proved that these
changing plumage birds are last years
immatures as this band number was
placed on the bird in the month of July,
through Sept. of 1963.
Sun. July 12
Sand Is. — Bulwer's Petrel — 3 new sites
of Bulwer's nesting areas were found, however,
none as yet had eggs. Overall, now there
is 5 pair with eggs, 1 pair with a chick
from 1-10 days old, & 8 pair with future nesting
sites. Of the pair with the chick, one has been
banded as 642-01137. The chick is all black
covered with down so soft that one is unable
to feel it with the fingertips. The down was
