Bratley, D.A. 1964 Sand Island, Johnston Is. Atoll (Notes) Mon July 6(??) light browned in color rather than red like the Phoenix do. species. The crab was in a large turk shell, species unknown, which had on the outside of it 5 sea-anemone like organisms. Both the crab & sea anemone-like animals were preserved in alcohol (70%), but in separate whirl bags. Each bag was given a field Series number; Div. of Birds, USNM tag. The tag number for the sea anemone-like animal was 25049, the hermit crab was 25050. Wed. July 8 Sand Is. - Wedge-tail Shearwater - saw a wedge-tail in the tunnel of the burrow cairn, a marked egg around in its cloaca. The large end of the egg was in the cloaca with the marked small and protruding. about 1/3 of the egg was in the cloaca. Once laying egg, these birds must be able to move them from place to place in this manner. Thur. July 9 Sand Is. - collecting skins - 4 adult Sooty Terns & 2 wedge-tailed shearwaters were collected for skins today. Blood samples were taken from the wedge-tails.
