Aug 25 Shot the female [illegible] Woodpecker referred to lately, after following it from tree to tree, beginning's way from Bowl, Allry to meadow gate, across orchard to va. Grinnings. A strike heard lately near High St. one seen on woodpecker oak by Smiths to-night, also a Call Woodpecker croaking there. Lots [illegible] Towhees in garden lately. Plenty jays in orchard; don't seem noisy. Have had hard work iden- tifying birds this summer at their shyness. Orioles or plain plumaged tanagers,
