1894 Dec. 9. Shot quail in pine & got a lot of feathers, 2" got 1 male; close range in pine & good condition. Big flock flew from pines S. of car rot patch into pines on F. T. road & on my approach from oppos- te side flew back again; didn't follow them up. Lots larks in mrcelow pasture but wary as usual & they never fly over you any more, but directly away from you. Winged 1 also shot at a flock back of my house. Ob- servec hundred Titlarks in meadows, especially around pools of rain water & along edge of marsh. They are like snipe as to choice of fording grounds. Fired 3or 4 shots @ a grebe on water can't kill the d. things. Also 1 at flock of Butterball, 1 at a Carpian Tron I think I hit all of these.
