Not long since I saw and killed a Gardner's Woodpecker on a small lypusine not two feet from the ground (i.e. 394a) I have never seen them so near the ground before. It was evidently perching for food, probably bugs. This was on the sandhill and there were no trees for a considerable distance. Dec. 23. While at work in a field a S ay's Phoebe came and alighted on a dead weed only a few feet away. It seemed to be fearless. It then flew to the ground in search of insects or grubs. I have never seen these birds on the ground before. It approached to within three or four feet of me. Dec. 30. The Phoebe referred to above is growing exceedingly tame. This afternoon it alighted on the ground within six inches
