of my feet, remaining several seconds - gazing me the while. I have heard from others of the habit I have lately discovered of the Ducks and Geese flying out to sea in the day- time if disturbed. It is reported a customary thing. From the top of the sand-hill I saw vast numbers of Gulls, Ducks, etc. resting upon the surface of the ocean. They extended seaward as far as I could see. Have lately become acquainted with the note of the White-tail- ed Kite. It is a kind of a whistle uttered generally, I think, when it is disturbed. Jan 6 - 1899. Some ducks ("Canvas- backs") were seen flying sea- ward and alighting perhaps one-fourth of a mile from the shore. Saw a Kite drop from its hovering position in the air
