Nettium carolinense.
March 13, 1909.
The males whistle a great deal particularly
at night, and they also appear a little quarrel-
some. Aside from the harsh "saw-felling"
call of the females, which is given chiefly at
night, I have once or twice heard them make a
low rattling noise. A couple of now mornings
ago there was a drake in the pond and one
of the two ducks on the edge. The second,
duck appeared and jumped into the water, and
swinging the front of the body back and
forth made this rattling noise.
March 18, 1909.
Like the Mandarins these birds seem to
like to bathe a great deal, particularly the
males.
March 21, 1909.
The females make the rattling noise quite
often when on the ground, and accompany
it with a lowering of the head.
April 14, 1909.
The birds all call a good deal. When whistling,
the males hold the head in a horizontal position, raising
and lowering it slightly, making sort of a pumping movement.
