Nottium carolinense
On November 12, 1908, I obtained a drake of this
species. November 16, 1908, I obtained a hen; both
were wounded birds.
Dec. 7, 1908.
Now have another pair of wounded birds of
this species.
Dec. 13, 1908.
My stock of this species is now reduced to
two drakes and one duck.
Dec. 25, 1908.
To-day I noted a drake on the edge of a
pond lay down and become motionless upon
hearing footsteps on a nearby board walk. He
did not have time to get away so he took
this means of protection. I have seen others
of this species do this.
January 9, 1909.
To-day I received two fine high-plumaged,
drakes
of
this species, both from Merced County.
February 28, 1909.
Both males and females now call.
