Alameda to and from San Francisco, bal.
Gulls and ducks as usual. Three or four
days ago I saw two Merganser (serrator?), one
a fine adult male, close to the mole. They
splattered off a few feet, not rising free
of the water and making a great splash-
ing with wings and feet.
This evening there were two Ardea herod-
ias on the sand, exposed beside the mole.

Alameda to and from San Francisco, bal.
Birds were about the same as usual on the
bay this fine clear day. A few Larus canus or Larus
brachyrhynchus were seen as well as Larus califor-
nicus and Larus glaucescens. Many of the latter on
hurricane decks of steamers. Loons and Phalacro-
corax diplotus going south near mole. An Ardea
herodias in shallow water by mole.
