distance were the usual congregations of ducks on the water. It is the consensus of opinion that ducks are scarcer than usual this year. Two or three mornings ago I saw a loon flying close to the mole. This morning there were a number of gulls flying northwest over Alameda near High Street Station; they came singly and in twos and threes. One or two gulls were noted during the day flying over San Francisco in an easterly direction. In the evening I saw none flying over the hills, but noted several bunches, [illegible] not exceeding six individuals apiece, flying westward along the low valley which runs about out Steary Street; one or two were noted to pass close to the St. Francis Hotel. Some of the birds appeared to come from south of Ferry Building. In the morning I rode inside the steamer. In the evening at about dusk there were a few gulls around the Ferry Building, but none on sheds or piles. One or two immature Larus glaucousens were noted. And hovering over the water were a few small gulls, apparently Larus canus or Larus brachyrynchus. Jan. 26, 1908. Alameda, bal. Conditions: - About 9:20 A. M.; moderate temperature; NE wind; clear. Dendroica anduboni. One or two in pear tree near house; very active; no high-plumaged ones seen.
