water when we were off Goat Island. The
gulls appeared to be mostly Larus californicus; two or three Larus decidentalis; and
one or two Larus heermanni, yesterday and
to-day.
Oct. 21, 1907. Alameda to and from San Francisco, cal.
Larus californicus is common and fat a few
follow the steamers. In a great variety of plumages.
Yesterday afternoon when returning from San
Francisco I saw two large flocks of small gulls
(apparently Larus philadelphia) on the water close
together off Goat Island. When the steamer passes
they all arose uttering a few shrill calls. There
were several large gulls among them.

Conditions:- Overcast; moderate temperature; light
wind; drizzly.
This evening I saw quite a few Larus heermanni off Goat Island; eight cormorants also passed
going southward. On the sand near the roundhouse
this morning there were one hundred and fifty or so sandpipers
