Alameda to and from San Francisco, Cal.
Conditions; - Strong NW wind; overcast in the morning;
moderate temperature.
I saw an Ardea herodias and a small hawk
flying over the marshy west of First Street this
morning. At the waters edge were some hundreds
of gulls this morning and this evening at low
tide near the roundhouse. Apparently they
were Larus californicus.
In the evening there were a good great
many gulls SW of Goat Island but at a long dis-
tance from the steamer. They were in a large
flock flying very close to the water.

In the morning gulls were very abundant on the
sand near the roundhouse. In the evening near a
warship and steamer lying SW of Goat Island
there were a great many gulls flying low over
the water - Larus californicus, adult and immature.
