coming up the coast into Monterey Bay. They were
strung out in a long line close to the water and
probably numbered 20 to a flock.
Calidris arenaria. One in the street near the
RR dept at Pacific Grove was caught by a
small boy. It probably struck a wire last night;
Beck said he heard some passing over.
Along the shore between Pacific Grove and
Monterey I saw a few gulls and cormorants
on the rocks and buoys.
Between Del Monte and Castroville I
noted three or four small ponds or lakes
full of tules. In one I noted several Eubulida
americana (?).
In the marshes above Castroville I noted
several some sandpipers and one Numenius hudsoni-
us.
On a fence beside the Pajaro River below
the town of that name I saw a Zenaidura mac-
roura. It sat motionless on the top rail of the
fence as the train passed within a few yards.
Near Gilroy. I noted a bathartes aura soaring
about on motionless wings. Falco sparverius
