They probably amounted to about a million.
They passed the Point in a steady stream for
about half an hour, the line almost stretching
from Pescadero Pt. to Pt. Barmel, when the
birds ahead began swinging into the bay and
lighting on the water. In a short time they be-
gan going north again, the birds which did
not alight circling in the bay. We headed
out to them in a launch: there were hun-
dreds and thousands on the water and thou-
sands passing by, all going northward again.
Many on the wing passed almost close enough
to be struck down with the oars, while
others on the water only got up when the
boat was within 8 or 10 feet of them. Many
were paddling about with their heads under
water for half a minute or so. They flew
in usual style, close to the water with
a few flaps and a sail. One bird was
observed with the back portion of the
head pure white.
