30. rode inside the steamer in the morning. On the San Francisco side Larus glaucescens was very common sitting on the piles. In the evening gulls were abundant: Larus glaucescens, common; Larus occidentalis, a few; Larus argentatus, two or three adults; Larus californicus, common. Two loons and a blangula blangula were seen going south when we were off the mole. The loons were sitting on the water. Three scamp ducks passed us going north. MAR 13 1905 San Francisco, bal. to Alameda, bal. Conditions: - Stormy yesterday and to-day until this afternoon; warm; light wind; overcast. Larus californicus. Abundant. Larus glaucescens. A few immature birds. Larus argentatus. Probably two or three. Olecanus californicus. One flying about off the ferry. I saw one grebe off Goat Island. About seventy scoters passed us going south in two bodies. A few ducks were seen along the mole and seawall. In the morning they were common. Aythya marila seems to be in the majority; I also saw a few Aythya vallisneria. Two blangula blan- gula were seen in a slough along First Street. MAR 14 1905 San Francisco, bal. to Alameda, bal. Conditions: - Storm approaching from the S.E. In the morning ducks were common along the mole and seawall. I saw some Aythya vallisneria and some Aythya marila, also a good many scoters. The same remarks apply to the evening trip.
