FEB 14 1905 Alameda, bal. to and from San Francisco, Cal. 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M., and 5:15 P.M. to 5:40 P.M. Conditions: - cool; overcast; S.E. wind. Ducks were very common but not abundant along the mole. I saw a few cormorants pass north. On the bay Larus glaucuscens was abundant. I saw three or four Larus californicus and a few Larus canus or Larus brachyrynchus. As the boat was entering the slip on the San Francisco side, I saw among several Larus graucescens standing on the roof of a shed, one Larus glaucus. The plumage was nearly adult; the primaries and secondaries appeared to be white. In the evening Larus glaucuscens was abundant. Off the water- front, Larus canus or Larus brachyrynchus was common. Saw one or two Larus californicus. Four loons passed to the south flying low over the water while we were off the mole. Along the mole ducks were common; one grebe was also seen here. Larus glaucuscens is remarkably bold. One young bird stood on the lower deck this evening within a few feet of the passengers. This morning there was a bird on each of the flag poles on the rear deck. One bird in particular was proud of his position, defending it with great zeal against any would-be usurpers. Very few adults of this species are seen. Larus canus or Larus brachyrynchus are nearly all adults. FEB 15 1905
