On the bay I saw a few small companies of scoters going south. As I was going on to the boat at the mole noticed a good many gulls circling about high over head. Apparently they were waiting for the boat to start. Of course a good many followed the steamer across. Larus californicus was very common; only a few Larus delawarensis were seen. As we approached the boat going to Alameda, a good many of the gulls following the Enema flew over it. San Francisco, Cal. to Alameda, Cal. 5:15 P.M. to 5:35 P.M. Conditions:- Clear; north wind; moderate temp. I saw only Larus californicus during the trip across. They were not very plentiful. There were a good many gulls following the Oakland boat westward bound. I saw four sesters in flight. It gets dark nowadays just about as we get to the mole.
