melospiza cinerea. common. Ardea herodias. A few. In San Leandro slough, I saw:- Nycticorax nycticorax. A few. Macrorhamphus scolopaceus. A few. Crenetes occidentalis. A few. Symphenia semipalmata. A few. Squatarola squatarola. A few. Ducks. (In flight) One large flock. The large plovers (Squatarola squatarola) have a pig- con-like flight. Some had very marked black bellies. Icterus melanocephalus has the habit of bobbing its head when alarmed. At home I observed the following:- Hirunderyphrogastrer. A few near the shore of the bay. Passer domesticus. Abundant. Aphelocoma californica. Heard one in back yard about 11:30 A.M. Both of the Rallus obsoletus taken were young birds, the down being still on the wings. Aug. 24, 1904. San Leandro Bay, Alameda Co., Cal. Conditions:- 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Overcast; warm; no wind. In the large slough between Bay Farm Island and the mainland, I saw a few Actodromas minutilla, also one Rallus obsoletus. In the large slough north of San Leandro slough, I
