there was a good sized flock of gulls. In the lough and on the beach near the roundhouse there was a large flock of gulls — many were Larus occidentalis — and a few large shore birds. Alameda, cal. Conditions:— 7:30 P.M. Conditions the same. A few Nycticorax nycticorax came flapping by over the house every few minutes from the rookery upon High St. Aug. 10, 1904. Alameda to San Francisco, cal. Conditions:— 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. Cold; overcast; west wind. I saw a few Passer domesticus in a pear tree, and a good many on the street. Near the roundhouse I saw a few large shore birds and a great many gulls, among which I saw Larus occiden- talis. A bunch of about seven Ardea herodias stood in the shallow water. Two flew as the train passed. To the north of Oakland break there were a good many gulls on the strip of sand back of the seawall. On the bay I saw Larus occidentalis, Larus californicus, and Larus heermanni; this last principally off Goat Is- land. San Francisco to Alameda, cal. Conditions:— 5:15 P.M. to 5:35 P.M. Overcast; cool; west wind. I saw a few Larus occidentalis on the wing while crossing the bay. Two or three small flocks of Vria troile passed by
