36. Along the march I saw a few Melospiza cinerea. On the sand near the roundhouse there were about ten small shore birds—probably sandpipers. There was also a large flock of gulls. I was sure of Larus occi- dentalis. One or two Ardea herodias stood at the water's edge. On the bay I saw Larus occidentalis and Larus her- manni—in fact we ran into a large flock of them off Goat Island. In this flock I noted one gull which looked to be Larus californicus. San Francisco to Alameda, Cal. Conditions:—5:15 P. M. to 5:35 P. M. Overcast; cool; good westerly wind blowing. On the trip over I saw the following gulls. Larus occidentalis common; Larus californicus, about three; Larus hermanni, about ten. On the sand near the roundhouse there was a flock of about 200 gulls— I distinguished Larus occidentalis —, and a few small shore birds. Flying low over the marsh there were some large Limicolae, probably curlews. At about 7:00 P. M., in Alameda — conditions the same: I saw three or four Hirundo erythrogaster flying about in the air. In my back yard I saw a balypte anna (?) darting about. July 26, 1904. Alameda to San Francisco, Cal. Conditions: 7:00 A. M. to 8:00 A. M. Cool; overcast; good westerly wind blowing.
