had been cleared but snow on each side. Very
wintery. Aspens bare except one clump in
protected place at Carpinteria Flat. Cattle yellows
to russet. Returned to Alta and started home
at 11 a.m. Warmer, less wind. Birds scarce.
Flicker
Heard Knight above Colfax. Saw Calif Woodpeckers
below. Increasingly abundant from Auburn dam.
Hears song of Gambel Sparrow at Davis :
Nov. 9. Rain at night.
Nov. 10. Clear - Walked up Strawberry Canyon and
back by the upper Tilles Road, coming out
above the top of Panoramic Way. Especially
noticeable was the scarcity of songs: only
Wren-tit and Thrasher heard. Also sudden
decline in Audubon Warblers — very few
were seen or heard. On Nov. 5 they were still
abundant near the house. One winter
aggregation consisted of juncos, Bush tits,
Townsend Warblers, Aud. Warblers, Titmouse,
Ruby-crowned Kinglets. As soon as we reached
the Deodars on the upper hill slope we found
Golden-crowned Kinglets. Near the Soil Erosion
plant a Hawk flew up from near the ground
but disappeared before I could identify it.
Birds seen or heard: Red-tailed Hawk, Sparrow Hawk,
Anna Hummer Flicker, Black Phoebe, Coast & Cal. Jay,
Titmouse, Bush tit, Wren-tit, Virginia Warbler, Thrasher, Hermit Thrush,
G.c & R.c Kinglets, Nuttall's Vireo, and Storm W. G. Goldfinch.
