1940 Mar.2 (contin') Near Milpitas we noticed a very long line of gulls - about half a mile long - flying northward - Apparently they were descending as if to alight on the bay. This was in the morning about 10 a.m. They certainly suggested a movement from the south to a more norther- ly feeding ground - one, lap in migration. Mar.3 - A beautiful spring day. Daffodils and Baby Blue Eyes in bloom. One Hermit Thrush, three to five Varied Thrushes. Chickadees in flocks. Junco's singing, one as if located for nesting. Mar.4. Berkeley. The Allan Hummingbird group had their first spring trip in Codornices Park. Overcast, clearing after noon. Birds not abundant. Only 3-5 Audubon Warblers; One small flock White-crowned Sparrows; a few G.c.Sp. Singing: Purple Finches, Song Sp.(an), Wren-tit, 1st Goldfinch. In pairs: Bush-tits. One nest in weeping branches of (red?) Eucalyptus in Linforth garden 1/3 done. Bird collecting steamy cobwebs of cocoon. List: Redtails(1); Zizels(flock); Anna Hummingbird 3-8; Allan Hummers 1-2; Flicker 3; Calif Jay 8+; Bush Tit, one small flock, six pairs - Wren-tit; R.c. Kinglet-8+; Audubon Warbler 3-5; Eng.Sp.(war Nro.Bushaks); Calif Purple Finches Linneto, Green-backed Goldfinch, Lawrence Goldfinch,
