cottage (where it had rained in around the
chimney and in the bath) we went as far as San Luis Obispo. At Morro Landing
we noticed shore birds at the left of the
road where many fields usually dry
were overflowed. Most of the birds were
Willets and Hudsonian Curlew, some
Long-tailed . (Perhaps 200 Willets, 90 Mtd. 10 Lt.)
No more stops for birds. Saw a few Yellow-tailed Magpies and the usual Sparrow
Hawks. Shrikes, Linnets, Goldfinches,
Crowned Sparrows, Brewer Blackbirds,
W. Bluebirds.
Jan. 13. We went on to Santa Maria Inn
for breakfast. Clear, crisp. Green every-
where. Rain has been abundant everywhere.
We drove over San Marcos Pass for the
first time. It was a beautiful drive
and views were gorgeous from the sum-
mit. As we passed Pt. Muiguet the N.W.
breeze died down and we stopped at
the lagoon a few minutes to look at
the birds there. Several Long-tailed Curlew,
and a group of Willets, one Ani. Egret
as well as gulls and St. Blue) Herons, Red-
Eared Grebe. Along the Porewellt Highway
wherever fresh water came into the ocean
there were large assemblies of gulls,
some Brown Pelicans, Cormorants
and Coots - A few Bluebills were seen -
but ducks were very scarce.
