and Brown Towhee, Purple Finch at 4:40 a.m. (Cloudy)
A little later a junco under the windows and
farther away a Virgin Wren. Still farther away
a quail and Thrasher. Heard no Lutescent
or Palestated Warbler but Tolmie Warbler sang
constantly. At 5 a.m. A Calif. Jay + Wren. T.
Cloudy.
In the afternoon (4:30) I walked up the
canyon by way of the upper road on the
South side; returning by the middle trail.
Clouds scattered, clearing.
Birds seen or heard: Spotted Towhee - 8,
Brown Towhee 2, Song Sparrow 2, Junco
1 singing, Virgin Wren 3, noisy youngin. nest;
Thrasher 2, Wren-Til 6-8, Tolmie Warbler-
2 in full song (one sang - . . . , w--)
Anna Hummer 2, Allen Hummer 1 male doing
pendulum, (Calliope ? I very small.
gray green back - flew before I could recognize)
Lutescent Warbler 6 - no song; Sh. Sh. Harts 1,
Dnail 6-8 pro., Warbling Vireo 1, Grosbeak 1,
Russet backed Thrush 2, Brush Tits - four families,
1 flock (2 families?)
May 4, 1934. Bird Lore Alamos and Saranap.
Beautiful sunny day. Stopped first at the
bridge at Alamos, then back to Saranap, re-
turning to Berkeley at 3 p.m. Saw Mourning Doves,
Quail, Hummer (Anna?), Calif. Wrenelfacius, Nuttall
woodpecker, Flicker, Bank Swallow (or Roughwing?),
Cliff Swallow, Calif. Jay (1), W. Flycatcher, Black
Phoebe, Wood Pewee, Brush Tits w. yq., Slender-
billed Vireo, Titmouse, Virgin Wren, House Wren
