Apr. 22 (contin.) At Mission Bridge over Calaveras
Creek, Yellowthroat, Redwing, Cliff and
Violet-green Swallows. Birds very abundant
the rest of the way. Many Yellow Warblers, several
Chipping Sparrows heard. Stopped a minute
at Alamo bridge where Lazuli Bunting
was singing. Dinner with H. P. W. Dunthorpe.
He told me he saw Lazuli Bunting in hills.
Apr. 23. Rain'd during night. Partly cloudy day.
Tolmie Warbler still singing at end of
road. Young Blue Jays in nest calling.
Heard Russet-backed Thrush in Linforth Yards.
April 24. Rain at night.
April 25. Clear. Beautiful after the rain. Young
Blue jays left the nest. I was awake at
dawn but there were no birds singing. Very
few sing through the day - The Tolmie Warbler,
occasionally a Song Sparrow or Vireo Wren.
Spent the morning in Mr. Beales's garden. Saw
Golden-crowned Sparrows. Also Lazuli
Bunting. Lutescent Warblers were carrying
food. No Yellow Warblers or Grosbeaks.
Mrs. Saunders reported that at Arroyo Verde
on April 15 she saw a pair of Phainopepla,
many Orioles and Kingbirds but no Lazuli
Bunting.
April 27. Beautiful day. Oaks Springs. Two nests
of Western Flycatcher - one on side of house several
feet below wide eaves fastened to electric wires, no
projection of any kind for support. Parent bird came
several times to feed young in the nest. Second
nest on cross piece at back garage - no eggs.
