1936
A Dusky Hawk caused all the willets to
rise from the Salt pool. At Mt. View Mere
many Clapper Rails very seen - showed very
little fear. When tide began to ebb flocks of
Long b. to Hrd. Curlew, Willets, some Godwits,
Dowitchers, Sandpipers, Black b. Plover and
Kildeer came in to feed. One Dowitcher
has a shorter bill, a more distinct white
line over the eye; attracted other dowitcher.
At San Mateo Bridge there were no Phalaropes.
Tide low, shore birds as far as we could
see. East wind in Berkeley, following 2 m. fog.
Oct. 29. Clear, cooler. Knights singing.
(Oct. 30. Rain all day -
Oct. 31. Clearning. Went to Santa Cruz with
Mr. & Mrs. McCabe. Explored beach north
to Davenport - Black Turnstones, Sandpiper,
2 (Hrd. Curlew), Spotted Sandpiper, Yellowlegs,
Short-billed-8 Hermanns Gulls, 2 Red-
Shalalopes in a lagoon - Nov. 1. Cets at Boulder.
Nov. 8. Explored the coast from Davenport to
Half Moon Bay with Mr. and Mrs. McCabe. Saw
only one flock of Sandpiper - no other
shore birds. A few Common Loons, gulls and Eared
Grebes. Great panicky of birds. Crossed San
Mateo Bridge - thousands 17 sandpipers at
west end, also a few willets and Bb Plover. At
east end thousands of willets, some godwits
and Bb Plovers. Tide low. Clear - excellent light.
Cold at night (hor. 7) - mist, ice and frost in morning.
Warm day - no wind along coast. N. mud in
Berkeley.
