Feb.
1921:
Feb. 10. Took Jamie D. Golden. Yati Park. Dense
fog on bay. Warm in park. Many birds sung.
Virg. Nuttall sp., Song sp. Virg. War. Lunch
on island in Sims Lake. Squirrel ate from
my pocket. Walked up Strawberry Hill, thru
through gap. Tea Garden to Academy of Sciences
gap. Plums in blossom. I heard buzz of Allen
Hummingbird but could not see it.
Birds seen: 2 Pied-billed Grebes, 2 Eared Grebes,
Gulls. 6 Canada Geese (came to be fed) Many
Ruddy ducks—some in full plumage. Many
pairs of Mallard—one Buffle-head.
Coot, Quail, St.-b. Goldfinch, Nut sp., Prairie
Eskimo, Eng. Spar. Flicker, Phyllon Vireo.
Aud. Warbler, Virg. War. R.-Knight,
Chickadees, Bush-tit. Varied Thrush,
Robins. Many N. Grebes on bay (40-50)
Feb. 11. Warm. Heard buzz of Allen H. in N.
Berkeley. Titmice in tree over nesting
box constantly. Some pairs of bush-tits
separate from flocks. Flickers drumming
and calling. Thrasher sings every morning.
Feb. 12. Dr. Grinnell brought U.C. Class to
watch birds. All birds came except
Thrush and war-tit. Varied Thrush seen
from window. Fog a.m. Warm.
