Boulders Creek.
in steep canyon. Gray Squirrel took sunbats
on Johnson fence. Moved bed on to porch.
May 15. Mysterious bird heard singing before
dawn - half an hour before any other
bird. Sounded far away. At dawn creepers
were calling constantly. Purple Finch is
most numerous judging from songs
which were very varied and ecstatic.
Located Allen Hummers nest from bed.
Song of R.B. Thrush heard.
May 16. Humming b. nest contained 1 egg.
Night was cold. Warm during day -
May 17. Hot.
May 18. Hot. Hummer's nest contains
2 eggs. Cotton gathered from ends of
swing rope. Walked up San Lorenzo
River road 2 miles. Swall, close
flock of birds size of Grosbeaks
flew below me. Bare impression
of black except middle of back
which was rusty. Call a tow whistle.
May 19. Hot.
May 20. Cooler.
May 21. Hummer Aldon remains on nest
more than 5 minutes in early A.M. Then
