May 18-June 1. House cleaning. Quail (a pair)
occasionally to table for food. Jays
look everything except a seed. By May 27
brought young up into trees near table.
Thrasher had young near table till May 29
when they moved farther up canyon.
Br. Towhee, 1 Song Sp. (banded) and 1 S.F. Towhee
came often for seed. Song Sp. very tame,
May 26. Went with Mr. and Mrs. Cantelow to
Los Banos. Drove by way of San Jose,
Gilroy, San Juan, Hollister. Pacheco Pass
closed so had to go by Pasoche Pass
and Tres Pinos, then along a foot hill
road back to Los Banos. At Miller
Lew Ranch near Gilroy saw several pairs
of Magpies, yellow-billed. Had nests in
oak tree across road from ranch house,
A little farther on we stopped near a
ranch where there were locust and large
willow trees. Found nest of Bullock's Oriole,
one of Black-headed Grosbeak and one
of Ash. Kipling containing young almost gone.
Almost dark when we went thru' pass. Sparrow
Hawk last bird seen. Heard St. Honed Owl.
Other birds seen from machine, Quail.
