May 27. Arose at 5:00 a.m. Got into marshes by 6.
First stop less than a mile from Los Banos,
B. Orioles and Kingbirds (atk.) in shade trees.
In overflowed land, Black-nicked Stilts (cir. 15)
Black Terns (cir. 25) one nest with two eggs,
on small platform in water about a
foot deep. I think the alarm notes of this
cpair brought the birds from some distance.
Saw also near open water: Forest
Terns and a few Green-winged Teal; also
Red-winged and Brewer Blackbirds. A few
Glossy Ibises flew in from the east and
a St. Blue Heron was seen in the distance.
As we drove on toward Merced many Burrow-
ing Owls were seen, some with young.
Also a Bittern.
We soon stopped again where the fields were under
water and walked some distance - Many
stilts came to meet us, also Black Terns.
