Grizzly Peak, saw two small hawks
at a distance, - probably Falco spar-
verius. They were evidently feeding on
insects. They would soar at some distance
from the ground, then swoop down
and skim along surface. Sometimes they
would head into the wind and beating
wings rapidly maintain a stationary
position, then swoop down. Some of
the raptors habitually forage in pair,
whether this is the case with the sparrow
hawk I do not know!
- In the dense growth of live oak, etc.
in canyon between Grizzly and Baldy, heard
California Thrasher. From its song, we
picked out the notes of the hawk, jay
robin. - Heard and saw a few sturnella
neglecta. - Between Grizzly and Bigle
among the recently planted pines
we found finches in large num-
ber (in almost total possession).
