Dec. 10
at 8:45 A.M. we were out checking the live traps
and scared up a Short-eared Owl from the grass
near the old pier - it immediately flew to
Johnston Is. and was harassed by Frigates and
Noddies for about half the distance - we found
five pellets in the immediate vicinity which we
collected for later investigation; we had only
trapped six mice (much poorer than at the
east end of the island); we found one broken
wing Sooty Tern, which we took blood from; we
also collected two Golden Plovers which had
broken wings; in late afternoon we constructed
a perch and put it in the ground on the
west end of the island - the horizontal perch
is about 10 ft. above ground - we had hoped to
get the owl to use the perch so that we
might later share him (to date - 12/20/04 - we
have no evidence that the owl has even returned
to Sand Is.); the Sooties are now coming over
the island at night in very large numbers;
Common Noddies are very thick along the east
shore at night - some of the Common Noddies
have a distinct bill coloration which is pink
except for the most distal 2 cm. which are black;
these may be birds of the year?
