Sept. 26 up at 6:30 A.M. to run guywire
census; saw the same Sandpiper about 7:30 A.M.
and thought I might get close enough to
net him; I rolled around on my hands and
bare knees through coral rocks, Tribulus "puncture
pods" and that bird made a real ass out of
me; he had the most uncanny sense to stay
just out of reach and still casually pick up
small insects while he was at it; I missed
the 8:00 guywire count in an effort to
catch him but gave up in time to make the
9:00 count; by this time I was so frustrated
I went to the barracks got the shotgun,
returned and put an end to his sneaky maneuvers;
while trying to catch him I lost the lens cap
off my camera and a pair of scissors; I later
found the scissors; between hourly counts I
took pictures with the 350mm telephoto; once
again a bird made an ass out of me by
outmaneuvering me and my camera - I would rush
up the beach out of sight of this feeding
wandering Tattler, set up my camera and wait;
he'd come hot footing it up the beach so fast,
and swerving so much that I was virtually
helpless to attempt pictures of him with the
tripod; that afternoon while Cam had the
census - I used the '700 mm with gunstock* and
got the pictures the birds had stubbornly
refused me earlier.
