Bottle-nosed Whales In 1912 Capt. Fred Olson told me that he saw some Bottle-nosed whales off Aikawa but that they came so fast he could not get a shot.
Capt. Melson says that last season (1911) he saw Bottle-nosed off the coast 120 miles north of Aikawa. Also said they came so fast for could not get a shot.
Black Killers All the whaling Capts., to whom I have often said they had never seen a killer that ever all black or that did not have its white underparts of Orcasorca. There are great numbers of killers in the Japan sea - the whalers see them every day.
Parasitic Fish Capts. Hurum and Melson say that the Remilgia antrovis (Remora) fish similar to the ones found at the Blue Whale are sometimes seen on Finbacks + frequently on Sei Whales. Hurum took one Sei whale at Aikawa in 1911, that had about 20 on it. The sucking disk is very strong about 3 feet long & would pierced & shaved me.
All whales according to Capt. Melson if the ship touches them get so frightened that they don't know what to do - even forget to go down.
