line of the scar. The fine wavy lines which radiate out from the center are apparently formed during the healing process after the parasite has left the host. At the bottom of each scar which contained a parasite was a sac containing more or less pus. The parasites were embedded about 1/2 inches in some, & in others had travelled a semi-circular course appearing again about 2 inches from the point of entrance. The parasites are about 8 inches long with a transverse "head" which embeds itself in its tubercles.
(They can be described later as many were preserved.) They could be pulled out with difficulty. They were most plentiful on sides of pelvis but were on top of rostrum, lips & back as well - few on the breast folds.
Some of the scars were irregular & branching white lines & did not have the wavy transverse lines radiating out from them - the majority however were of the oblong type. The scars on the Blue & Sei whales are caused by this same parasite I saw seen see above
There is however a different parasite which affects the Blue Whales which I believe to be a curled, curled, set leaves a cup shaped depression, sometimes lined with a membrane having a granular surface. This seems to be mostly on Blue Whales - at least I have not seen it on Fin-Whales or Sei Whales. I remember of having seen an Elephantine in Alaska which has the same scars as I have described below - probably caused by the same parasite!
