121 Osteology of Phocena no 32 I dissected the specimen with extreme care & there is no possibility that the following results are not absolutely correct. There are 17 pairs of ribs - the next to the last rib on each side in long but is attached to the transverse pieces of the vertebrae. The last pair of ribs are short & "floating" & might easily be overlooked. There are twenty-six lumbar vertebrae if the vertebra opposite to the pair of floating ribs is counted as a lumbar. If it is counted as a dorsal, the number of lumbar will be twenty-five. C D S F Ca 7 16 or 17 26 or 25 - 46 : 95 There are 35 cheurones in the entire series. The two or three small cheurones at the beginning of the series commonly present on porpoises are absent at this specimen. The first cheuron is long but free distally. The laminae of the 2nd are very broad & the spine is pointed distally it is slightly longer than the first. The 3rd is of about the same width as the first but is longer than the 2nd. The next 4th to 5th are very narrow
