Sunday Aug.16 Clear and cool. Spent the day about the house writing to C. &c. Aug.17 Clear and warm. In the morning took the steamboat with S. and disembarked in my boat at Leonards pond when we found about 20 brood of young geese. Paddled S. off to a flock of 4 of which he killed three & threw them into the water: at the report a larger flock ran from the grass and grazed the boat when I found both Barry killing my first bird. The steam steaming from Bristol in about an hour took us on board & we reached the lake home by 12 o'clock. On the broad of the lake I saw a flock of about a dozen Blwi: Bonapartii as well as a number of Barus agutatus. Spent all the afternoon in making a broad sail for my boat. Bats went in, to the shies this morning and came out with a large basket of trout as well as a black duck & several partridges.
