"The Smear"
Left with a fair path we made it early by 10 o'clock and getting my rod together I had the small trout jumping most exhilaratingly. Every time a cloud passed over the scene the fish struck the flies almost as soon as they touched the water and by 5 P.M. I had taken about 75 from one 1/2 lb. honors! Starting for home we had a most delightful tramp through the woods in the cool of the afternoon & as we emerged from their dark shade just as the sun was filling the light on the mountains to the S. it was most lovely passing through all the indescribable shades from son color to deep azure blue. We saw many bear "signs"-logs that they had rolled over in quest of grubs & c. 4 old Thompson literally to pieces by their powerful claws. Birds of all kinds were exceedingly numerous at the Smear a very fine adit. Crows passed over our heads and some of the familiar small birds, M. Melodia Zan. &c. had young then.
